Gallbladder Surgery
Gallbladder surgery, or cholecystectomy, is the removal of the gallbladder, most often because of gallstones. It is one of the most commonly performed abdominal operations and is usually carried out laparoscopically, through a few small incisions, so most patients return home within a day.
What Is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy?
The gallbladder is removed through small incisions using a high-definition camera and specialized instruments. Where the anatomy is unclear or inflammation is severe, imaging of the bile duct may be used during the operation, and the approach may be changed to open surgery when that is safer for the patient. The gallbladder stores bile but is not essential: after removal, bile flows directly from the liver into the intestine, and most patients eat normally after a short adjustment period.
