Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome

Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome

Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) Syndrome is a rare digestive condition in which the third portion of the duodenum becomes compressed between the superior mesenteric artery and the aorta, causing partial or complete obstruction of the passage of food from the stomach into the small intestine.

Our gastrointestinal surgery team provides comprehensive evaluation and individualized treatment for patients with SMA syndrome, ranging from nutritional and medical management to minimally invasive surgery when required.

What Is SMA Syndrome?

Normally, the duodenum passes between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery without significant compression.

In SMA syndrome, the space between these structures becomes narrowed, causing the duodenum to become compressed. This can interfere with the normal movement of food and digestive fluids through the small intestine.

The condition may develop following significant weight loss, certain anatomical changes, or other medical conditions.
