Retroperitoneal & Soft-Tissue Tumor Surgery
Retroperitoneal and soft-tissue tumors are growths that develop in the space behind the abdominal cavity or within the soft tissues of the trunk. They may be benign or malignant, and often grow quietly until they become large. Treatment is planned individually after imaging and, where appropriate, a biopsy.
What Are Retroperitoneal and Soft-Tissue Tumors?
The retroperitoneum is the space behind the abdominal cavity that contains the kidneys, the major blood vessels and the surrounding fatty and connective tissue. Tumors in this area may press on or involve nearby organs and vessels, so surgery requires detailed planning and, in selected cases, removal of adjacent structures together with the tumor. Depending on the type, size and position of the tumor, surgery may be performed open, laparoscopically or robotically.
