Hiatal & Paraesophageal Hernia Repair
Hiatal hernia repair is a surgical procedure used to treat a hiatal hernia, a condition in which part of the stomach moves upward through an opening in the diaphragm into the chest.
Surgery may be recommended when symptoms are severe, persistent, difficult to control with medication, or when complications develop. Our surgical team uses advanced laparoscopic and robotic techniques when appropriate to repair the diaphragm and restore the stomach to its normal position.
What Is a Paraesophageal Hernia?
In a paraesophageal hernia, part of the stomach moves up beside the esophagus through the opening in the diaphragm. Unlike a simple hiatal hernia, it may cause difficulty swallowing, chest discomfort after meals, shortness of breath or anemia, and in rare cases the stomach can twist and become trapped, which needs urgent treatment. Larger paraesophageal hernias are usually repaired surgically: the stomach is returned to the abdomen, the hernia sac is removed, and the opening in the diaphragm is closed, with reinforcement where needed.
Symptoms of Hiatal Hernia
