Swallowable Gastric Balloon
The swallowable gastric balloon is a non-surgical weight-loss treatment that needs no endoscopy, no sedation and no procedure to remove it. The balloon is swallowed as a capsule during a clinic visit and passes naturally after about four months.
What Is a Swallowable Gastric Balloon?
The balloon is folded inside a capsule attached to a thin tube. The patient swallows the capsule during a clinic visit, its position is confirmed by X-ray, and it is filled with fluid through the tube, which is then removed. Placement usually takes 15 to 20 minutes as an outpatient visit. After about 16 weeks the balloon opens, empties and passes naturally. Nausea and stomach cramps are common in the first few days and are managed with medication. It is not suitable after previous stomach surgery or with certain stomach conditions.
